(Oct 7) Celebrating the Genius of the Kaval Player Tsvyatko Blagoev at BNR (+GAL)
On 7th October, 2015, Rotary Club Sofia International attended a celebration and a jubilee concert at Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Tsvyatko Blagoev’s birth – a genius musician and kaval player, father of our RC Sofia International 2014-2015 President, Mrs. Radka Stamenova.
.
Tsvyatko Blagoev was the first folk music performer who played live on the national radio, making his debut in 1935, founder and leader of the Ugarchin Group of folk instrument performers which became the first folk music band on the payroll of the Bulgarian Radio in 1948. The Ugarchin Group became the core of the Folk Music Orchestra at the Bulgarian Radio Folk Music Ensemble, established in 1952 and conducted by Boris Petrov, with Tsvyatko Blagoev as its concertmaster and assistant conductor.
.
Tsvyatko Blagoev was the first to introduce musical notation in folk music and taught solfège to many talented folk music performers, whom he had discovered while touring the country. Not a single day passed without Tsvyatko Blagoev’s performances on the Bulgarian Radio. Solo, together with the Ugarchin Group and with the Bulgarian Radio Orchestra, Tsvyatko Blagoev made hundreds of recordings, which are nowadays part of the Golden Fund of BNR, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Balkanton.
The celebration of the 100-anniversary of Tsvyatko Blagoev’s birth, titled “Folk Music Is My Life” after the eponymous book about the musician by Professor Mihail Bukureshtliev, gathered hundreds of guests in the Marble foyer of BNR.
For his contribution to our national culture and in appreciation for the trail left by Tsvyatko Blagoev in the memory of generations, BNR Director General, Mr. Radoslav Yankulov, handed an honorary plaque to the son and daughter of Tsvyatko Blagoev – Mrs. Radka Stamenova and Mr. Gecho Blagoev. Tsvyatko Blagoev was posthumously awarded a crystal necklace for his overall work by the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers, handed to the folk musicians’ heirs by its Chairman, Stanislav Pochekanski.
The guests received as a present a CD titled “Folk Music Is My Life” with 17 performances of Tsvyatko Blagoev, watched a photo exhibition about the professional life of the talented kaval player arranged in the Marble foyer, and part of a documentary film about him by Daniel Spassov, a journalist from BNT.
The apotheosis of the celebration was the jubilee concert in tribute to Tsvyatko Blagoev by which the BNR Folk Music Orchestra conducted by Dimitar Hristov officially opened the new season in the renovated Studio 1of BNR.
