(May 11) Regular Meeting and a Presentation by Rene Kist (+GAL)
On 11 May 2016 Rotary Club Sofia International held its regular meeting in Hilton Sofia. The club event was enriched by the unexpected visit of a Jordanian delegation that visited Sofia to promote the nation and its active role in the Middle East conflict.
It was led by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of he Jordan Parliament and former Minister of Regional Develeopement, Mr. Hazem Qashou, who delivered a short devoted speech, in which he highlighted the positive role of the Jordan government and its people, continuously played in the Middle East peace process and the provision of land and accommodation to the many refugees the country hosts.
Main event of the evening was the presentation by Dutch Rotarian and regular guest of the club, Rene Kist (RC Barendrecht), on transport development in underdeveloped countries. Rene presented both a global as well as a local perspective on various transport issues such as the development of main transit canals in the world and the development of Bulgarian ports and intermodal transport in the regional context. All was adequately supported by relevant pictures showing the sometime poor infra structure and outdated handling equipment in ports.
Rene is actively engaged as Team Leader in the JASPERS funded (EU/EIB/EBRD) Technical Assistance project aiming at capacity building for the Bulgarian Ports Infra structure company. His presentation and opinions were on personal note and do not reflect that of the EC or JASPERS.
