(16 May) Regular Meeting and Presentation by Mr. Alberto Staykov of the National Polytechnical Museum (+GAL)
The regular meeting of the club took place on 16 May in Hilton Sofia. Among our regular guests we had he pleasure to welcome Mr. Jamie Sanabria Tapias, from Columbia, who presented himself and all present welcomed him.
Before the regular meeting the Board held a meeting and Ms. Hristova updated the members about the decisions taken. The main topic was the traditional Whisky Tasting Fundraising Evening, which this year will be held on 7 June 2018 in Bodega Tsar Asen on 6, Tsar Asen Str. in Sofia. After that Mr. Stüer updates us about on the progress of the project with DEBRA Bulgaria – for medical supplies for the “Butterfly Kids”. Thanks to the involvement of Mr. Stüer we were able to achieve good discounts and buy much more goods with the money collected at our Wine Evening on 15 March 2018.
After shareing the latest invitations we have received, Mrs Hristova gave the floor to Mr. Alberto Staykov who presented the National Polytechnical Museum.
The National Polytechnic Museum is the only museum in Bulgaria which collects, studies, preserves, and presents the development of technology and science, which have changed the lives of the people in the past two centuries in Bulgaria.
More than 1000 exhibits, related with mechanics, time measuring, communication equipment, musical instruments, photographic and cinematographic equipment, typewriters, computers and more are presented there.
Alberto explained, that only there the visitors can see the three-wheel “Messerschmitt KR 174”, also an elegant four-cylinder “Ford” – model “A” from 1928, as well as an attractive recreation of a wooden bicycle made in 1880, next to it the iconic for our past bikes “Balkan”, also many mopeds, a bicycle – powered by a solar panel. WEhibited are also variety of mechanisms from antiquity that transmit strength, movement, and thus energy.
There is the time measurement section, the various clocks and the rich collection of pocket watches. Photo and film enthusiasts can get acquainted with some of the first snapshot cameras. The collection of telephone equipment includes: wall-mounted, desktop, military-field telephone sets and numbering devices from the beginning of the twentieth century, operating panel of a telephone exchange for 600 posts, production of Siemens from the 1930s.
The Bulgarian contribution to the development of computing equipment has been illustrated. Among the displayed computers are: the first Bulgarian microcomputer, developed in 1979 model “IMCO” – an analogue of Apple II Plus; the electronic calculator “ELKA6521” – the fourth produced in the world and the first one, which includes the rooting function.
